Leafy Sectional Garden

Making sense of a long, sloping garden to create sectional ‘garden room’ spaces which cater to the whole family and deliver year-round interest.

Our brief included the creation of additional parking space at the front of the house, integrating entertainment areas for an out-door kitchen and seating space, include a lawn for play and design a weaving path through the garden down to the previously installed garden room in order to link it to the home.

We started by creating beautiful sight lines from the house down through the garden to the garden room and designing a simple path that winds through parts of the garden, at points hugging the sides to allow clear areas of lawn and generous entertaining spaces. The movement of the path makes the garden feel bigger and acts as a thread connecting the long space. We terraced the garden to create separate garden room zones - a lawn with beds, a bbq and dining area, a seating area and a beautiful planting area overlooked by the outdoor room.

Fieldstone walls take in the level changes and provide structure to house a Green Egg bbq and worktop area as well as offering spots to perch and spaces to look over the garden.

The curved lawn gives a sense of expanse and accommodates garden football. Our planting design takes you on a journey through the garden - shade tolerant planting under the mature trees at the top of the garden moves into vibrant, colourful planting in the middle and lower garden. We preserved the best of the trees giving the garden a sense of maturity and added to them some beautiful multi-stem Amelenchiers, Magnolias and Japanese Acers for structure and mid height planting.

The garden is planted for year round interest, starting early with spring bulbs, swathes of colour in the spring and summer and colour, berries and winter structure later in the year from evergreen shrubs, perennial grasses and seedheads. The design delivers a larger feeling space as well as several more usable areas to cater to the varying needs of the family.
